It was used to keep the cigarette smoke off the hands and prevent nicotine stains and yellowing of the fingers. They also stopped the ash from falling onto clothes, particularly useful as ladies didn't wear smoking jackets. 

This cigarette holder takes the form of a ring and is a practical fashion accessory. It will also help keep the smoke away from your fingers. Made from brass, these holders are adjustable, and you can pull or squash them to fit the size of your finger.
